v description v

The West Broadway Development Corporation commissioned Prairie Architects Inc. to design a sustainable compact 24-suite, 25,677 square foot urban housing co-operative for a vacant site on Sherbrook Street in downtown Winnipeg. The firm organized a group of area residents and members of nearby cooperatives for a Collective Design Process to define the context and character of the co-op. The preferred design approach was for a three-storey building centered around a central courtyard. An additional storey added more suites to the original plan. The group preferred that all suites should have cross ventilation and be accessible by an exterior deck rather than enclosed corridors. The courtyard faces south and acts as a sun-catcher for warmth and wind enclosure. Entrance to the building is through a gate from the street into the courtyard and up a central stair/elevator off a common room. The central court is designed as a children’s play area and a vegetable garden.

The building is designed as a fully sustainable building receiving LEED® Certified designation. It is designed to have a ground source heat pump, heat recovery ventilation, with green material selection. The $3.6 million project began construction in 2008, with occupancy in the summer of 2010.
