Gimli Seniors’ Housing is a new 40-unit seniors housing complex located adjacent to the New Horizons Seniors Centre and lawn bowling green, in Gimli, Manitoba. Fully funded by the Province of Manitoba, this new residence is operated by the Gimli Seniors Residence group and provides synergies between the seniors centre and the active living area for seniors.
The building is 4-storeys, wood frame construction and includes (4) fully accessible 1-bedroom suites, (6) 2-bedroom suites, and the remainder 1-bedrooms, all fully visitable. On the main floor there is an administration office, as well as a community kitchen and large lounge space, with additional lounge space on the second floor with a large outdoor deck facing Lake Winnipeg. Each floor contains shared laundry and a public washroom, as well as a fully accessible tub room on the 3rd floor.
The project followed an IDP process and integrated sustainability aspects to meet the Manitoba Green Building Pilot Program for Residential Buildings (GBP-RES) pilot program, which establishes standards and practices that protect occupant health; improve indoor air quality; reduce waste streams; use less energy and water, and use financial and other resources more efficiently. The overall impact
of building construction and operation on the environment is reduced by on site waste management processes throughout construction. The project team completed an energy model at every major milestone in design and construction documents, and was reviewed by a commissioning consultant.
